According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2016, more than 15 out of every 100 American adults over the age of 18 smoked cigarettes. If you do the math, it means that 37.8 million adults in the United States currently smoke cigarettes. There used to be an option when it came to cigarettes; You smoke or you do not smoke But in 2004, the world was introduced in the e-cigarette. The electronic cigarette has been hotly debated about its health benefits and potential harm to the body. But the real question is "is it safer than smoking?" According to a new study funded by Cancer Research UK, vaping is safer than smoking cigarettes.
The basis of the study was to evaluate the potential risks of long-term use of electronic cigarettes, as well as to compare it with smoking. Its objective was to compare the exposure of nicotine, tobacco-related carcinogens and toxins between cigarette smokers and ex-smokers with prolonged use of electronic cigarettes. The researchers recruited the following groups of participants: ex-smokers with prolonged use of electronic cigarettes, cigarette users, long-term users of electronic cigarettes and regular cigarettes.
To determine their results, the researchers evaluated the sociodemographic aspects and smoking characteristics of each participant. Participants provided urine and saliva samples and analyzed for biomarkers of tobacco, nicotine and other volatile organic compounds. The results showed that users who only use e-cigarette and NRT showed the lowest levels of carcinogens compared to smokers and cigarette smokers of both cigarettes and e-cigarette. The researchers also found that after analyzing the urine and saliva samples of 181 participants, the levels of NNAL, which is a chemical related to cancer, were 97.5% lower in former smokers who switched to vaping in comparison with those who continued smoking.  One of the project's scientists, Lion Shahab, says that the main message for anyone reading this study is that long-term use of electronic cigarettes will likely bring important health benefits in relation to cancer risk, in comparison with those who smoke. He adds that electronic cigarettes are certainly safer than smoking combustible cigarettes.
Health risks of electronic cigarettes. Just because something is a healthier alternative to something unhealthy does not mean it's good for you in the long term. Yes, the previous study shows that electronic cigarettes are a better opinion in terms of health than cigarettes. But there are also health risks that come with them too. A study conducted at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University found that electronic cigarettes have the potential to release large amounts of toxic metals in their vapors. To arrive at the conclusion of their findings, the scientists examined 56 users of electronic cigarettes and discovered that several electronic cigarettes released vapors with unsafe levels of chromium, manganese, lead and nickel. Although this is a small sample study, it provides information for electronic cigarette users to consider it.
Another study conducted by the UNC School of Medicine and published in the American American Thoracic & American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, found that electronic cigarettes not only trigger the same immune response as combustible cigarettes ; but they also stimulate a unique immune response as well. Dr. Pushan Jani, a pulmonologist at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and UTHealth, says that when the lungs sense that something is not right, the immune system rushes to attack. Dr. Cedric Rutland, a pulmonary and critical care physician and assistant clinical professor at the University of California Riverside School of Medicine, adds that vaping can cause inflammation in the lungs, even if he smoked pure water vapor.
The end result here is that yes, electronic cigarettes are a safer alternative to smoking combustible cigarettes, but that does not mean you should stop smoking and take vaping. Both have their health risks like many things in this world, but the easiest solution for this is to quit smoking without switching to an electronic cigarette.
