Omega Force is a master of his trade. Do you want to literally kill thousands of enemies in a short space of time? It has you covered. The Warriors series has gone everywhere, from derivative series that collaborate with other franchises such as Dynasty Warriors Gundam, to having their own built-in kingdom management simulators such as Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires. But with the recent negative reception of Dynasty Warriors 9, Omega Force lost contact with what their fans really want?

The short answer, no. A Warriors, Orochi 4 likes to have a large number of characters, merging the Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors, giving hardcore players a bit of pleasure when it comes to the character selection, which consists of 170 characters, plus the double what you will get. with Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

In practice, this does not mean much. For whoever you play, the main game mode remains the same, and each character is simply mastering a basic set of moves based on their weapons and abilities.

This makes Warriors Orochi 4 the first time I really feel tired while playing a Musou game. Sure, you can switch between 3 characters in an absurdly large battlefield and assert dominance and win that way, but the game does not consist of much more than combining combos and abilities.

At this point, we've seen it all. Warriors in Hyrule, Warriors in Gundams, Warriors in Berserk: at this point, the formula feels exhausted. As someone who usually enjoys the game and the overwhelming crushing of enemies, Warriors Orochi 4 feels that they need a bit more than the basic combat circuit offered.

The Story Mode is real nonsense (but that's not really a bad thing). The Greek gods have planned to join the worlds of Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, and as such, have ridiculous magical abilities. The story is reproduced completely straight, and while there may be hundreds of characters, the real plot leaves them in the dust. Maybe your favorite will receive one or two lines? Maybe not. It really does not matter, since the story seems to be full of exaggerations. The game knows what it is,

The area in which Warriors Orochi 4 attempts to move the pot is combat. As mentioned above, you can select up to three characters in Warriors Orochi 4, and toggle between them at any time with the touch of a shoulder button. In addition to splitting the action, this means that you have the opportunity to juggle a bit of poor sap among your crew. Start accumulating a combo about an enemy captain, change character and continue with pain.

However, since killing literally thousands of people is not enough, you can also use magic to become a literal force of nature.

Magical attacks are powered by a magic meter that accumulates over time and is shared among the members of your team. When the time is right, a skillful tap of R1 will unleash anything from a tidal wave until your character becomes a giant boar.

The more I talk about this game, the more ridiculous it becomes. Murders of people, some interventions of Greek deities, specific magic abilities of each character. Somehow I think the Omega Force has deviated slightly from the history books. It fuses in the game, but never manages to overcome my feelings other than being useful.

It's good that Omega Force wants to present New tricks to change tried and tested tropes, but it never really translates into a significant change to the usual formula . Updating the mechanics to get new weapons feels basic and the user interface feels clumsy.

When it comes to finding your favorite warriors, for example, there is no way to include your regulars in a list, which would make them easier to select from a large stack of 170 .

This is exacerbated when you want to play with a friend in multiplayer mode. Warriors Orochi 4 aims to maintain a smooth and silky rhythm of 60 fps, but with the amount of special effects on the screen, combined with the large number of characters on the field at any given time, the game is the victim of frequent falls of frames and screen tears.

Koei Tecmo has made a valiant attempt to revitalize a somewhat antiquated formula, the introduction of character change and magical abilities alleviates a bit the feeling of simply combining the same combos over and over again, but the game does not keep you engaged On a fundamental level, if everything is fun and ridiculous from the beginning, where does it really go from there?

Verdict

Warriors Orochi 4 is not a particularly bad game, but it seems that it is doing everything possible to innovate in a tired formula, but those new additions might not be enough. Composed of delicate menus and performance problems, it leaves the game leaving a little more to be desired than what it currently offers. And no, that does not mean that they have to add more characters.
