The Avengers: Infinity War spoiler joke is the Ready Player One of memes

Main fans for the end of Avengers: Infinity War to follow.

Late in Avengers: Infinity War Thanos, who wears a gauntlet, snaps his fingers and effectively condemns half of civilization to death. Captain America watches impotently as his best friend, Bucky, dissolves into a pile of dust. Spider-Man sizzles "I do not feel so good," and bites him in the arms of Tony Stark. Even Nick Fury of Samuel L. Jackson can not escape death.

Really, the fans are commemorating the tragic loss of so many favorite fans (before some of them inevitably return to the aftermath) as a meme. Along with the last words of Spider-Man, the joke includes an image of the disappearance of some character, such as SpongeBob, or maybe Jack of Titantic .

That's it. That is all the meme.

Memes spread for many reasons: they can be identified, they replicate easily, they're adorable nonsense. This particular meme is referential humor in its most boring form; if you have seen Infinity War you understand. If not, well, you've been watching spoilers without realizing it.

Although the meme has generated some creative jokes, like using the iconic Windows logo it mostly only applies to any character or object that you want. It is best appreciated if you have seen Infinity War or at least know how it ends; if not, it is lost in you. It is a neat version of Ready Player One a story that reveals references to pop culture like the confetti that springs from a piñata in the shape of DeLorean.

These viral jokes work because they are available to anyone who gets the joke, but accessible is not equal to laziness, or at least, is not necessary. The culmination that is Infinity War brought together a decade of stories, references, tricks and Easter eggs. The least we can all do is put some effort into their first meme.
