Microsoft is releasing the new Surface Pro 4 firmware this week, and finally features on-screen support for the Surface Dial accessory. The software manufacturer originally promised to fully support the Surface Dial on the Surface Pro 4 in October 2016, with an approximate release date of early 2017. The support allows the Bluetooth-driven disc to display contextual radio menus with which it can interact directly on the screen (below the surface sphere).
Microsoft's latest Surface Pro includes this ready-to-use stand, and Surface Studio all-in-one was the first to present the Surface Dial on the screen. Obviously, the size of the Surface Pro 4's screen is much smaller than Surface Studio, but the ability to detect the disk and display menus could be useful for some. Unfortunately, Surface Dial support has been quite limited from application developers. Adobe finally started supporting it for Photoshop in October, but it's a very basic support. Applications like Sketchable were the first to show what Surface Dial is capable of, but we are still waiting to see much more.
