Kinsta Review – A Managed WordPress Hosting Company – aThemes

Kinsta is a managed WordPress hosting company that is based on the Google Cloud platform. Shortly after they were launched five years ago, they established themselves in the competitive WordPress hosting market as a major player.

They did so by offering an easy-to-use interface, effective security and good support. Your hosting plans start at $ 30 per month and come with many great features such as free website migrations, daily backups and web site staging.

In this article I would like to take a closer look at Kinsta and show you what the company has to offer.

Who are Kinsta?

Mark Gavalda launched Kinsta in December 2013.

Instead of following the traditional route of offering cPanel through shared hosting, VPS hosting and dedicated servers, Mark opted to create Kinsta on Google's Cloud Platform.

Cloud hosting allows hosting companies to scale their customers' needs more easily, offer a faster user experience and better handle traffic spikes. Kinsta uses 16 data centers around the world and offers all customers a global network of content delivery through KeyCDN.

 Kinsta Team

I met Kinsta shortly after its launch in 2013 as my friend Brian Jackson joined the company as a marketing specialist.

When Brian joined the company there were only 8 employees, but he recently advised me that Kinsta now has 40 full-time employees in all of its offices in Los Angeles, London and Budapest.

What does Kinsta offer?

Managed WordPress services are generally more expensive than unmanaged hosting solutions. That's why companies like Kinsta include many services and additional features such as daily backup plans and an integrated content delivery network service to boost the delivery of web pages.

Kinsta also offers additional functions such as creating websites. This is a fantastic feature that allows you to make important changes to your WordPress website and test them before implementing them on your live website.

The Kinsta platform uses Nginx, PHP 7, LXD and MariaDB containers, to ensure that all the websites your platform loads quickly. Safety is an important focus too.

In addition to SSL support and monitoring of uptime to notify you if your website is down, they offer DDoS attack detection, malware scanning and hardware firewalls.

The daily backup copies of the website are available if all goes wrong and have an intrusion guarantee in which they promise to fix your website if your website is hacked.

 Features of Kinsta

When you log in to your Kinsta account, you can create a new conversation by clicking on the message icon in the lower right corner of the page.

The Kinsta team has a 100% resolution rate for client issues and has WordPress experts in standby mode 24/7.

 Kinsta Dashboard

When you click on the support icon, you will see a list of all previous support tickets. You can easily create a new support ticket and when you start a new conversation you are informed that most of the support tickets are answered in a few minutes.

Kinsta offers free website migrations too When you move a website to Kinsta, you first set it up in a test area so you can make sure everything is working before changing the DNS of your domain (Servers of domain names).

Migrations can be requested directly through the Kinsta user interface. You only need to provide them with the existing web hosting connection information so they can handle the migration.

Note that the $ 30 per month entry level plan does not include free website migration, while the more expensive plans have a defined number of website migrations allowed in the account.

 Kinsta Migration

Other features can be added to your hosting account. These characteristics are mainly aimed at larger companies. Cloudflare Railgun, Elasticsearch and Redis cost $ 100 per website per month. The Nginx inverse proxy costs $ 50 per website per month.

Daily backups are provided with all Kinsta hosting plans. The downside of this is that most of your hosting plans only store backup copies for 14 days. Your $ 300 monthly plan increases the duration of the 20-day backup and your $ 600 plan extends this to 30 days.

If you want backup copies every six hours, it will cost you an additional $ 50 per month per month. If you want to make backup copies per hour, it will cost you an additional $ 100 per month per website.

In my opinion, your premium support plans are expensive, so you may want to consider a cheaper alternative, such as VaultPress, if you need real-time backups.

 Kinsta Add Ons

The most important thing to remember about Kinsta and all managed WordPress hosting services is that each feature and service is designed with WordPress users in mind.

This means they have experience in securing and maintaining WordPress websites. It also means that they have the proper configuration to handle WooCommerce stores and high traffic WordPress websites.

The Kinsta user interface

Kinsta calls its customer control panel "MyKinsta".

MyKinsta is a custom user interface that Han designed from scratch. It looks cleaner than cPanel and places the entire main menu on the left side of the page.

The board gives you a general description of your websites, use of resources, your latest bills, bandwidth and visits. [19659002] All of your websites can be managed through the sites section below. This is where you will find important website settings to set up your website.

When you add a new website, you can choose not to install WordPress, install a new WordPress installation, or clone an existing environment in your account.

 Add a new website

The information tab shows information such as your website's path, IP address, and SFTP / FTP login information. I chose not to install WordPress when I added my test website, however, a database username and password were already set up for me.

The domain tab is useful as it links to the URL of your website and the WordPress administration area (assuming you did not change your location).

 Kinsta domains

In the backup tab you can manage backup copies of your website.

Backup copies are processed automatically every day, but can be processed manually if necessary. If you have a problem with your website, you can restore a backup in a trial environment or on your active website. Alternatively, you can choose to download a backup copy of your website.

 Kinsta Backups

There are a number of useful tools in the sites section. This includes an option to clear the cache of your website, enable HTTPS, select which version of PHP is being used and search and replace it.

 Kinsta Website Tools

The Sites area also allows you to add redirected URLs, deny IP addresses, and view access logs, caching records, and error logs. Your content delivery network can also be configured here.

There is an add-on page available that shows which add-ons are active on your website. It shows you which WordPress plugins are active and which version is installed, however, this page is only to provide you with information about what is installed. If you want to manage your WordPress plugins, you still need to sign in to the WordPress administration area of your website.

Website hosting statistics rarely replace a more feature-rich service such as Google Analytics, however Kinsta displays useful information such as visits, bandwidth, requests, response times, storage in cache, main countries and regions, and more.

 Kinsta Analytics

Other options in MyKinsta include Kinsta DNS, billing, a configuration area that allows you to add two-factor login authentication, and an activity log that shows who logged on .

You will also see a link to the Kinsta knowledge base. I recommend referring to the articles there if you are not sure of something before opening a support ticket.

 Kinsta Knowledge Base

All in all, the MyKinsta control panel is easy to use and navigate, although I would like to see the control panel improved in some way.

There is an option to view the installed add-ons, but there is no option to manage them. There is also no option to manage WordPress themes. Similarly, there is no file management system available.

I'd also like to see a Uptime monitoring area that shows graphics of my website's uptime and downtime.

Of course, with a managed WordPress hosting service like Kinsta, the control panel is deliberately limited. Some functions are restricted for security reasons, other functions are removed to adapt the control panel to beginners.

Those of you who have run websites for years and are used to a control panel like cPanel will notice many useful features and missing advanced settings. For example, there are no email options and there are no options for cron jobs, protection of active links or error pages.

I think that, for the most part, website owners will not have any problem with these missing functions, since the Kinsta support team can handle advanced tasks for you. If you have hosted websites using a control panel such as cPanel or Plesk, remember that Kinsta and other managed WordPress hosting services do not offer you as many options.

In fact, that's the point of WordPress managed hosting services like Kinsta. They take on most of the maintenance tasks so you have more time to concentrate on creating content for your website.

Kinsta hosting plans

Each Kinsta hosting plan includes daily automatic backups, free SSL certificates and website organization. You can also choose to host your website in one of the 16 global locations.

You are assigned a defined amount of SSD storage and CDN bandwidth in each plan, however, your plan is also limited by the number of WordPress installations you have and the number of unique visits your website receives.

Your basic initial plan costs $ 30 per month and is suitable for a WordPress website that receives less than 20,000 visits per month. The 3GB of storage and 50GB of bandwidth that is provided should be sufficient for most small websites.

The initial plan at $ 30 per month, and the professional plan at $ 60 per month, have some limitations. The startup plan does not include a free website migration, while the professional plan only provides one. None of these plans gives you SSH access and the initial plan does not include website cloning or WordPress support on multiple sites.

 Popular Housing Plans

If you exceed your plan's visit limit, you will be charged $ 1 for every 1,000 visits. The excess CDN costs $ 0.10 per GB.

There are some managed WordPress hosting companies, such as FlyWheel, that do not charge for overstepping their limits. Kinsta's excess charges seem fair and transparent, but consider the costs that you might incur if you receive an increase in traffic from a social networking website such as Reddit or Twitter.

My main criticism of Kinsta's pricing policy is that its minimum recidivism period for backups is only 14 days. I would like to see this extended to 30 days for all plans.

 Kinsta Plan Table

It should come as no surprise that a managed WordPress hosting service such as Kinsta charges more than an unmanaged service. web hosting solution You get many additional features and services included in your package, such as daily backups, an integrated content delivery network, website organization and experienced WordPress technical support whenever you want.

If you compare the price of Kinsta hosting plans with other managed ones WordPress hosting services are certainly competitive from the point of view of prices.

Kinsta Performance

Kinsta is based on Google Cloud Platform.

When you add a new website to your Kinsta account, you can select one of 16 global locations. This allows you to host your website in a place closer to your target audience.

Available locations are:

  • Belgium (BE)
  • Frankfurt (DE)
  • Hamina (FI)
  • Iowa (US Central)
  • London (UK)
  • Montreal (America) Northeast 1)
  • Mumbai (IN)
  • The Netherlands (Western Europe 4)
  • Northern Virginia (US East 4)
  • Oregon (US West)
  • São Paulo (BR)
  • Singapore (SG)
  • South Carolina (US East 1)
  • Sydney (AU)
  • Taiwan (TW)
  • Tokyo (JP)

Kinsta also offers a defined amount of CDN bandwidth from its associated KeyCDN. This allows you to store a static copy of your websites in more than 30 locations around the world. KeyCDN can also host images and videos.

Clearly, Kinsta is concerned about the performance of the website, so I wanted to test its service and see how fast Kinsta and Google Cloud Platform are actually.

As noted above, each Kinsta hosting plan comes with an option to integrate a content delivery network, however, since KeyCDN is a third-party content delivery network, the tests below were performed without a CDN is active. If we had chosen to test the speeds with active KeyCDN, we would be to some extent testing the speed of the static HTML files stored in the KeyCDN global network, and not the performance of Kinsta in Google Cloud Platform.

For this purpose try:

  • I installed a new copy of WordPress
  • I activated the theme Twenty Seventeen WordPress
  • Elementor installed
  • I activated a full Elementor page template on the start page

No other WordPress plugins were installed, however, this should be enough to help us see the performance of a website hosted on Kinsta.

  Elementor Template
A business style template was applied to the homepage of my WordPress test website.

I was quite impressed how Kinsta worked in the benchmarking services. As indicated above, no other WordPress plugins were installed, so the total weight of the page will be less than that of many live websites, however, no caching plugin was activated or any network was used of content distribution.

Google PageSpeed Insights did not show I have a PageSpeed score, but I got an 81/100 optimization score for desktop computers and 79/100 for mobile.

The recommendation of Google was to optimize images and minimize CSS and Javascript. These are problems that a WordPress cache plugin would solve.

 Google PageSpeed Insights

GTmetrix obtained a performance score of A (92%) and a YSlow score of B (82%). He said that the 47 requests and 2MB of page file on the page took 1.2 seconds to load.

Pingdom gave a performance rating of A (92%). While the page size and total page requests reported were similar, it showed a faster load time of 796 milliseconds.

The previous performance reports are more impressive when you consider the page template that was the test was a non-optimized page without caching and the images were not reduced in size.

A closer look at the page shows that about 80% of the page size comes from the images. That's a lot of weight to add to a page.

 Pingdom Report Breakdown

The breakdown provided by GTmetrix and Pingdom shows that the response time to the Kinsta server was around 200 milliseconds. That's impressive and illustrative of how fast Kinsta and Google Cloud Platform are.

If a WordPress cache plugin was activated and the included Kinsta content delivery network was used, I have no doubt that the performance of my test website would have been drastically faster.

Kinsta quickly established itself in the marketplace as a professional company that provides secure and secure WordPress hosting along with WordPress technical support.

They offer many excellent features for WordPress users, such as daily backups, website staging, website cloning, and fast performance with the help of KeyCDN's global content delivery network.

Your MyKinsta control panel is simple to use, although as someone who has always had a more hands-on approach to website administration, I would like to better see the WordPress theme and add-on support in the control panel . A file manager would also be very useful.
