Chrome 77 makes it easy to create your own Chrome browser theme with just a few clicks. Choose your favorite colors for the Chrome browser toolbar and set up an elegant background image directly from the New tab page.
How to enable the new customization tools
These features are not enabled by default in Chrome 77, but they are still there: you just have to enable some hidden flags.
As always with flags, Chrome flags can be changed or deleted at any time. We hope the flags disappear soon when Google enables this feature by default for everyone soon.
To enable the new Chrome customization, type chrome: // flags in the Chrome Omnibox, also known as the address bar. Type "NTP" in the search box on the Flags page.
Enable the "Chrome Color Menu" and "Version 2 of the NTP Customization Menu" banners. Simply click on the box to the right of each one and select "Enabled."
Your changes will not take effect until you restart Chrome. Click on the "Restart now" button that seems to do so. Make sure you save any work you have on Chrome’s tabs. Chrome will automatically reopen its current tabs when it restarts, but the content of those tabs, for example, information written in text boxes on web pages, may be lost.
How to customize your Chrome browser
You can now customize the theme of your Chrome browser directly from the New tab page.
The full Chrome browser themes are still available and are a bit more powerful than this, but only a little. It is now quick and easy to customize your Chrome browser without choosing the colors that other people like.
To get started, click on the "Customize" button in the lower right corner of the New Chrome tab page.
You will see options to select the color and theme of your browser, the background image and the shortcut preference here.
To choose your preferred colors, click on "Color and theme" and click on one of the color combinations. You do not have to select any of these combinations: you can click the dropper icon in the upper left corner of the color list to get a color picker. This will allow you to select the color you prefer. Chrome will automatically choose a lighter and similar shade to match the precise color you choose.
To select a background image for your New Tab page, click on "Background" in the left pane and choose an image. You can select a category and an individual image or enable "Update daily" to get a new background image every day.
You can also select "Upload from device" and select any background image you prefer or keep "No background" selected For a cleaner appearance. If you choose "Bottomless," Chrome will choose a background color for your theme.
Finally, you can choose how you want the shortcuts below the search box to appear. Select "My shortcuts" to choose your own shortcuts, "Most visited sites" to have Chrome automatically put your most visited websites here, or "Hide shortcuts" to disable shortcuts completely for a cleaner look.
You cannot hide the search box on the New Tab page at this time. There was a flag called "Remove NTP fakebox" that hid this box in previous versions of Chrome, but it was removed from Chrome 77.
