Like Windows, Microsoft has built-in a secure mode feature in its popular productivity suite, Office. If you encounter problems in which documents block the program after opening them, or you can not save them, it is often best to open them in safe mode and start troubleshooting them from there.

In the Cortana search bar, type Run and click on first result to open a Run dialog, or you can press Windows + R.
Type one of the following commands (depending on the program you are trying to open): winword (Word), Excel (Excel), powerpnt (PowerPoint), outlook (OR) utlook), mspub (Publisher), visio (Visio). The chain will be the program you choose, followed by a space, and then / secure. For example: winword / safe would open Word in safe mode.
Press OK to start the program and start troubleshooting.
