Google published its annual diversity report today, and among the data there is a new section that details the attrition rates, that is, the frequency with which employees leave the company. And it points to a key problem that Google has to create a more diverse and representative workforce: Black and Latino employees leave more often than white and Asian employees.
That's particularly problematic, because black employees represent only 2.5 percent of Google. labor force, and Latinx employees are only one point higher, at 3.6 percent. Attrition data also show that men leave Google at slightly higher rates than women. That may mean that Google is doing a better job of retaining women, although these figures do not explain why people leave, so it's not always clear whether rates are good or bad; It is entirely possible, for example, for men to find it easier to move through Silicon Valley than women, leading to depressed attrition rates.
Google's global diversity statistics for the year show that its gender composition is essentially the same, with women inventing just under 31 percent of the company, since they have the last four years. The presence of Blackx and Latinx employees also remained stable, with both of them only marking 0.1 percent.
