In the lunar-based Islamic calendar, this Eid falls on the tenth day of Dhu al Haijjah and It lasts four days. Muslims around the world sacrifice halal animals to honor the goodwill of Hazrat Ibrahim AS (Abraham), who sacrifices his own son Hazrat Ismail to the command of Allah (sWT) but Allah (sWT) knows him through his angel Hazrat. Jibrail says that his sacrifice was already normal and that the son was exchanged with a sheep. That was a sign of the reputation of Abraham's sacrifice.
