Dell G5 15 Gaming Laptop Review: A Good Starter Rig

Contents

Although it is a portable computer for heavy games, the Dell G5 15 is not afraid to be a little sexy with its red and black style inside and out. It is a good choice for those looking for an entry-level gaming device that can handle moderate workloads. If it is you, this machine ($ 899 / £ 669.00 to start, $ 949 / £ 762.81 as proven) can be a guardian, especially with its easy updating and good battery life. However, competitors that cost only $ 100 more offer better performance and visualization quality.

The G5 seduces with its attractive rear vents and its combination of red and black colors. If it's going with matte black, like in our review sample, you'll get a soft black cap with a bold red Dell logo in the center framed at the top by the gray hinge. You will have to excuse the stains, which are inevitable in this magnesium alloy chassis. The machine is also available in Beijing red with black details for most configurations (more information in the Configurations section below).

The left side of the machine houses the Noble security lock slot, a connector for the power adapter, an RJ -45 Ethernet port (10/100), a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port and an SD card reader . On the right side are HDMI 2.0, a Thunderbolt 3 port, a USB 3.1 Type A and a headphone / microphone jack.

The hinge of the laptop has thick lines, like those of a radiator, which extend horizontally. The front edges of the lid and machine platform are also covered with rigid lines, although they are thinner than those found on the back of the machine. In general, these lines contribute to the high-tech aspect of the laptop.

The opening of the G5 reveals a lot of black and a touch of red. The platform features an island-style keyboard and a simple white LED power button in the upper right corner. The red backlight combined with a red font causes the keyboard to skip, even the Caps Lock button shows a red light when activated. Only for players, the W, A, S and D keys are delineated in a thin red border. Both the left and right sides of the platform have a vertical line that extends downward to obtain a subtle angular appearance.

Less sharp is the sharpness of the corners of the cover and lid. These stabbed my palms occasionally. The cover has ample space, although I would prefer less space so that my wrists can more easily reach my desk or wrist rests.

Maintaining its full-body appearance, the G5's screen is framed by thick bevels. The lower bezel is the thickest and sports a Dell logo.

The G5 is a heavyweight, even compared to other gaming laptops. It measures 6.1 pounds (2.8 kg) and measures 15.3 x 10.8 x 1 inches (389.1 x 274.8 x 24.9 mm). That's more machine than the Lenovo Legion Y730, for example, (5.1 pounds, 14.4 x 10.2 x 0.95 inches) or the MSI GV62 8RE (5 pounds, 15.1 x 10.2 x 1.2 inches).

Games and graphics

With an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB graphics card, Our configuration of the G5 was acceptable but not particularly impressive while playing at 1080p.

When I playing Middle Earth: Shadow of War in configurations high, the game ran between 44 and 60 frames per second (fps) but generally remained in the range of 45-55 fps. I did not experience any stutter, whether I was fighting a slave master or Ur-dag the Glutton hit me. G5 fans distracted sometimes, as they buzzed audibly while I played, even when I was not involved in heavy action.

In Rise of the Tomb Raider (very high settings), the game ran at 25 fps, below the playable threshold of 30 fps and the GV62 8RE, which has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU 3GB of higher grade. However, this is a better score than the Legion Y730, which has the same GPU as the G5.

]

The G5 played Hitman (ultra configuration) at 57 fps, which is better than our two comparison laptops here but still below the average score of the gaming laptop.

In Grand Theft Auto V (very high), the G5 only managed to reach a playable frame rate but it was still behind the Lenovo laptop and could not be compared to the MSI. Nor did he achieve the category average here.

We see the G5 alone again making the cutting of the reproducible frame rate, with 31 fps while running Metro: Last Light (high). For what it's worth, this is better than the Legion Y730 did.

Performance

] With an Intel Core i7-8750H quad-core and 8 GB CPU DDR4 RAM, the G5 worked well when productivity came to light but encountered more aggressive workloads.

With 25 open Chrome tabs, including lots of ads The sites and Netflix broadcast an episode of Parks and Recreation, there was an occasional but not constant pause between the change tabs. However, I could hear the optimistic voice of Leslie Knope playing continuously without stuttering.

In the Geekbench 4 test, the G5 fell behind the average of the gaming laptop. It also did worse than the Legion Y730, which has the same CPU but twice the RAM. In contrast, the G5 stopped on the GV62 8RE and its smaller Core i5-8300H CPU.

In our file transfer test, the G5 copied 4.97 GB of files in 50 seconds, a rate of 102 MBps. That's quite a decrease in what the average gaming notebook can do in this price range, 295.3 MBps, so it's no surprise that the G5 rating is also a repeat compared to our comparison laptops.

In our Excel Excel test the G5 was more impressive, matching 65,000 names and addresses in just 43 seconds Finally, the G5 managed (barely) to reach the top, surpassing both its competitors and the average category.

]

When it comes to transcoding a 4K video to 1080p through the benchmark index of the handbrake, the G5 needed 12 minutes and 14 seconds, more than the average. But to be fair, the batter still fared better than the MSI.

Display

Display
] The Dell G5 comes standard with an IPS display 15.6 inches with antireflection resolution and Full HD (1920×1080).

When I saw a trailer in HD for the next live-action Pokémon movie (never I thought I would write those words) Detective Pikachu I was a little disappointed (and not only because Ryan Reynolds has decided to express Pikachu). The dark images, like the clothes and the black buildings were a tension to see. I could not have said that a Charmander walking in the foreground was orange if he had not known that the Charmanders are orange.

A poster mostly black in the shadowy part of the protagonist's bedroom on Dragonite and Hypno was almost impossible to read without leaning to different angles. But brighter colors, such as Pikachu's yellow coat and the orange columns of an explosion, were bright. From a perpendicular angle of view, the content could still be seen, but with a glow that distracted the lower half.

It was also a challenge to observe the darker details in Middle Earth . The dark brown patches that protruded from the ground were bland and indistinct, and the details of fine lines, as in the darker parts of Talion's attire or the shadows of the stone walls were also more subtle.

Covers a mere 58 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is quite mute compared to the Legion Y730 and is below the average laptop for games in this price range as well. And the average brightness of 219 nits on the screen is a faint drop in the cube compared to the Legion.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Despite the island style keyboard of the G5 that has only 1.2 mm of travel (shy of our favorite 1.5 mm), your keys have some complement for them. With 74 grams of pressure required, the keys produce a decent click sound with each press; However, a little more travel would definitely improve the writing experience. In the 10fastfingers.com typing test, I got to 101 words per minute with an error rate of 3.3 percent, a little higher than my typical 2 percent.

The 4.1 x 3.1 inch touchpad, with its brushed finish and red outline, is soft and sensitive, but not slippery. You get a lot of rebound when you press it, what you can hear. Although the touchpad does not have separate buttons, they work strongly with strong clicks. Windows gestures, such as touches and three-finger sliding, worked without problems.

Audio

The G5 is almost as noisy as it is noisy. The volume was powerful and satisfying during an improvisational session of "All these articles I've done" by The Killers. The sound filled our lab room so well that I feared I was bothering people outside. But the sound was not only strong; It was detailed I was able to distinguish different instruments and, for the first time, I noticed different female voices singing along with Brandon Flowers in the final iterations of the choir.

When I play Middle Earth the sound effects are also interrupted , whether it be the menacing steps of Mogg the Painted, that runs over me or the grumpy growl of the Ur. The voice of -dag before his club hit me with a traumatizing and precise noise of jets.

Upgrade capability

]

The G5 is easy to update, with just one Phillips head screw that separates it from its internal components. The M.2 SSD can be removed after unscrewing a Phillips head screw, while the hard disk can also be changed after removing four Phillips head screws. There was room for one more RAM in our review unit, which you may want if your configuration, like ours, has only 8 GB installed. While an open DIMM slot leaves room for another DDR4 RAM, if the unit has to be shipped with 8 GB of RAM, we would prefer to have two 4 GB cards (2x 4 GB) instead of an 8 GB card, since using a The channel reduces memory performance. However, Dell gets bonus points for allowing users to update the M.2 Wi-Fi / Bluetooth module: just remove another Phillips-head screw.

Battery Life

It will not last all day, but the Dell G5 has tremendously good Battery for a mobile gaming platform. The 56 Whr battery lasted 6 hours and 17 minutes in our battery test, which surfs the web via Wi-Fi. That's almost two hours more than the average gaming laptop in this price range and embarrasses the Legion Y730 and GV62 8RE.

Heat

After running Metro: Last Light at medium settings for about 15 minutes, the point between the G and H keys of the G5 reaches 36 degrees Celsius (96.8 degrees Fahrenheit). The touch panel reached 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), and the bottom of the machine was 46 degrees Celsius (114.8 degrees Fahrenheit). We would prefer a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).

Webcam

The 720p webcam on the G5 really wanted it to be darker and more orange than me in real life. I was impressed that the white lights coming from the ceiling lights of our office and the sun-filled window behind me did not wash things (except a little from the window itself), but my skin was more inclined by the amount of visual noise

Software and warranty

The G5 comes pre-installed with Dell Mobile Connect to connect your smartphone, Dell Power Manager and SupportAssist to monitor hardware and software problems, Smartbyte network optimizer and Waves MaxxAudio Pro for settings

Bloat is lightweight but includes a Dropbox promotion, LinkedIn and Microsoft Solitaire Collection, and McAfee Security and WebAdvisor.

Dell supports the G5 with a limited one-year hardware warranty.

Configurations

Our G5 revision configuration came with an Intel Core i7-CPU 8750H six-core, 8 GB RAM, one Nvidia GeForce GTX 105 0 Ti 4 GB GPU and a 128GB SSD and 1TB hard drive, 5,400 rpm. This configuration is not currently available by Dell directly, but you can find it in Newegg for $ 949 (£ 762.81). Unfortunately, this version of the Dell G5 does not seem to have that juicy red color in the US. UU

If you have a budget, you can switch to a quad-core Intel Core i5-8300H CPU and drop the hard drive in favor of a PCIe-NVMe 256GB M.2 SSD only. This configuration comes with the same GPU and RAM as the previous one and costs $ 899.99 in the US. UU

Those looking for the bestial G5 can get an Intel Core i7-8750H, 16GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 1060 with Max Q and 6GB VRAM, which means it's ready for VR. It also has a 256GB SSD and 1TB hard drive. All this costs $ 1,099.99.

Buyers in the UK have many configurations to choose from, ranging from £ 669.00 for an Intel Core i5-8300H, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 1050, a 1TB hard drive and, surprisingly, Ubuntu Linux 16.04, for £ 1,399.00 for an Intel Core i7-8750H, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1060 with Max Q, 512 GB SSD and 1 TB hard drive and Windows 10 Home.

Bottom line

The Dell G5 15 is a sufficient machine for people who play in moderate environments and do not perform very intensive workloads. In addition, its red and black design is a delight for the eyes.

However, the machine was dull in our performance benchmarks, falling behind the category average several times. Its excessive heat and noisy fans distract slightly when playing, and its screen is more subdued and less colorful than the competitors. If you have $ 100 more to spend, you can get more power and a more impressive display on the Lenovo Legion Y730. That machine did better on three of the four performance benchmarks, and its screen blows the G5's screen out of the blue waters.

But the Dell G5 15 can handle moderate workloads and games, and its impressive battery life means fun. It can continue longer than with many other gaming laptops. In addition, you can improve performance on your own by updating your components, which Dell facilitates nicely. This is a notebook for solid initiation games, but one is not free from defects.
