Acer Predator Helios 500 hands on Review

What is Acer Predator Helios 500?

The Helios 500 is Acer's new flagship gaming notebook. It is a great desktop replacement machine with a 17.3-inch screen and a large number of high-end gaming hardware options, in addition to being compatible with overclocking.

We recently had some moments to get some first impressions of the new machine and so far seems to be a capable option for those looking for a high end gaming laptop.

Acer Predator Helios 500 – News

This is a new range for Acer, but the Helios 500 is a familiar-looking machine as the 17.3-inch game laptops go. It is a great beast of a system that certainly lives up to the desktop replacement nickname.

As for style, it's definitely not subtle, thanks to numerous angular lines, a prominent Acer Predator logo on the lid and several illuminated areas, but the almost black color scheme keeps things with a reasonably elegant appearance.

The quality of construction also seems good, with much of the exterior sporting a nice soft touch and everything feels reassuringly strong.

As expected on a 17.3-inch machine, the keyboard includes a numeric keypad and an additional set of game keys is also available in the upper left. The whole thing is also backlit and the keys have a well-defined action for them. It will be interesting to see if the UK version has an adequate design in the United Kingdom, instead of the American version seen here.

A large trackpad sits below and its surface feels very good and tracking seemed to respond.

Regarding the screen, there are some options, with the version that we saw showing a 1080p panel, although there is also a 4K version available. This version supports the 144Hz refresh rate, making it a true panel of games and, in terms of image quality, it certainly looked decent. G-Sync is also included for trouble-free, tearful and stutter-free games.

Acer Predator Helios 500 – Specifications

Like most gaming laptops, the Helios 500 will be available in a number of configurations, with the high-end unit including a Core-i9 8950HK and Nvidia GTX 1070 overclockable – it's a surprise to find that the Helios 500 does not offer a GTX 1080.

You can also choose for up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM, Intel Optane disks, M.2 NVMe SSD and more hard drives great for massive data.

Acer Predator Helios 500- Price

The price of Helios 500 will vary depending on the configuration, but it will start from $ 1,999 (£ 1,799), which is quite typical for a large and powerful laptop of this type.

Acer Predator Helios 500 – release date

The Helios 500 will be available from June 2018 onwards.

First Impressions

There is nothing too revolutionary here, but it seems that the new Acer gaming laptop will be a perfectly capable option at a decent price. Exactly how it compares to the competition is something that we will discover in our complete review later in the year.
