Drivers who use mobile phones while driving could be fined without their knowledge, thanks to new technology that can detect the use of the phone.
The new technology is programmed to be installed in stationary traffic cameras and will not only detect the use of the phone, but will also be able to fine drivers automatically. No police intervention is needed.
This call to action comes after NSW Road Minister Melinda Pavey called for "technology-based practical solutions" to prevent mobile use while driving, and could make it harder for drivers to get away with yours. Currently, the line of sight remains the main means of detection for the police.
The use of camera technology to reduce mobile phone use offenses has been included in the Bill of Rights of the Government of New South Wales Bill 2018 of the Road Transport Legislation Amendment. first in Australia to adopt this type of legislation.
