An epic romance transformed by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga into a sensual and moving film, with a great soundtrack.
Originally done in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason and, of course, in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, A Star Is Born is a classic choice for a renovation. The challenge for the director and co-star Bradley Cooper was, not only to bring the already told story to a new audience in a fresh and interesting way, but also to satisfy the old fans of the story and do justice to the original story.
We can confidently say that Cooper's interpretation does not disappoint in either extreme. With its precise direction and incredibly powerful performance, the audience is breathless and eager for more. His version of Jackson Maine, the rock star who fights against the addiction of the woman he loves, is emotionally raw and credible at all times. Seeing him struggling urgently to stay sober through his growing fight against tinnitus is very sympathetic with a new germination of audiences who recognize they recognize a disease rather than a weakness.
Naturally, Lady Gaga offers the sensual and talented performance we've come to expect from her. Seeing the couple fall in love is wonderfully charming and could not feel more real. In a heartbreaking spiral, we see the two dance a story of impotent love that leads to a dramatic climax. We experience the inner workings and the emotional agony of the lovers of two crossed stars, who like Romeo and Juliet, never find their happiness forever.
In general, any criticism that can be expressed about this film should be aimed at the original story itself, since Cooper could not have done a better job executing his vision. The crucial success of this beautiful and fresh version is that, although we know the plot, the powerful emotional interpretation still surprises us.
With the performances deserving of Oscar for Gaga and Cooper, this is definitely a movie that is worth seeing. Tight belt for the roller coaster of true love and lost love.
