Waymo self-driving minivan involved in crash in Arizona

An autonomous vehicle operated by Waymo was involved in an accident in Chandler, Arizona, on Friday afternoon, according to local news stations. The images from the scene of the accident showed a Waymo minivan with its sunken side and another vehicle with a broken front. There were minor injuries reported on the scene.

Chandler police said that the Waymo truck was in stand-alone mode with an occupant at the wheel at the time of the crash, but that it was not the "infringing vehicle," according to ABC 15 News. A spokesperson for the Chandler and Waymo Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In March, a self-taught Uber vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian, the first known victim of a crash that involved a car without a driver. As a result of the accident, Uber has suspended its autonomous driving tests throughout the country, and the industry has faced new scrutiny. Waymo CEO John Krafcik said publicly that his technician would have prevented the collapse.
