Back at CES in January, Kia made fun of an upcoming Niro EV crossover that featured a Chevrolet Bolt that rivals 238 miles of range. While that concept also had 5G connectivity and a new infotainment system with gesture controls that did not seem intended for production, the Niro EV itself is intended for showrooms.
Kia showed the first pictures of the Niro EV on Friday, as it made its debut at the 5th International Exhibition of Electric Vehicles in Jeju, Korea. Except for the striking car add-ons, the style largely mimics both the CES concept and the Niro standard hybrid and hybrid plug-in. The automaker said the Niro EV will use a 64 kWh battery pack that will allow an estimated 280 miles on a single charge (450 km). It is estimated that a separate package of 39.2 kWh from the Hyundai Kona EV is good for 186 miles with a load. Both estimates should approach the 238 miles promised in CES when the Niro EV is tested by the EPA.
No other details were disclosed, but the Niro EV should have a price close to EVs like Bolt and Tesla Model 3 (the elusive $ 35,000, however). The 2018 Kia Soul EV, which the Niro EV will likely replace in the United States, starts at $ 34,845.
