The design studio Takieso Graft Design, based in New York City, has developed an elegant wool-covered mouse pad with a wireless smart phone charger built into the top. The device, called MousePad +, is now on Kickstarter for the initial price of $ 29, and for all accounts it looks pretty good.
The wireless charging pad, which is a Qi charger, is covered in brown, black or blue leather according to your choice, while the mouse pad uses wool fiber on a felt base. It can be plugged directly into your laptop or computer, and the company announces it as a laptop, since you can fold it and roll it up to fit it in an ordered rectangle slightly larger than a standard paperback.
Takieso is calculating a delivery date of August 2018, but as a Kickstarter project, be sure to take it with a grain of salt. The company is only asking $ 15,000, and is already one third of the way with 45 days ahead. Therefore, it is likely that the campaign will reach its goal unless it encounters unforeseen inconveniences.
That being said, mouse mats are an endangered species, especially in the era of built-in and wireless track pads, as well as laser and optical mice that can track almost any surface. The wireless charging aspect is also a bit misleading, since you can simply plug your phone into your computer to get a faster charging rate. The device is also USB-A, which is a bit inexplicable in 2018. (The campaign offers a $ 35 commitment level that includes a USB-C adapter, in case you have a newer laptop)
But if, like me, you enjoy the sensation and the aesthetic presence of a mouse pad on your desk, the MousePad + is a small and cool gadget that has some practical utility.
